POSITION: Diatom Analyst

CLOSING DATE: Application review begins May 15; position open until filled. The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia has an immediate opening for a full-time Diatom Analyst. Primary responsibilities will include identification and enumeration of diatom samples collected from a variety of waterbodies throughout the United States, with an emphasis on rivers and streams. On average, about 75% of time will be devoted to identification, enumeration and taxonomy of diatoms, and 25% on related tasks, including data analysis, and writing.
DUTIES: The primary responsibility will be analysis of diatom samples, but investigation and resolution of taxonomic issues is also essential. The position requires close and effective communication with Academy project team members and administrators, as well as fulfilling Quality Assurance/Quality Control requirements and keeping well organized and detailed records.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Masters degree in a field closely related to Aquatic Biology is preferred, although experience analyzing diatom samples is key. A strong interest and background in diatom taxonomy, particularly current concepts and literature is necessary. Familiarity with use of diatoms as water quality indicators is desirable. Organizational skills and attention to detail are important components of this position. Familiarity with IBM compatible personal computers and software, particularly word processing, database management (Microsoft ACCESS), spreadsheets, and Internet communication is important. Experience with image acquisition and manipulation is desirable. Salary is commensurate with experience. Position available July 1, 2004, but a start date in early Fall is possible. This appointment will be for a minimum of one year, with a high probability that funding will be available for at least one succeeding year.
