Expedition manager
We are currently looking for an Expedition manager to lead our marine conservation and research programme in Andavadoaka, southwest Madagascar. The position is voluntary, and for a minimum period of 6 months, commencing August 2004.
The position involves leading a team of up to 18 research staff and volunteers, representing Blue Ventures interests in Madagascar, and directing the efficient day to day running of the research camp. The successful applicant must have good physical fitness, a working command of French, knowledge of accounts, experience of living and working in the developing world, and the motivation and enthusiasm required to work long hours in a challenging and extremely remote tropical environment. Successful expedition management requires excellent communication, leadership, diplomatic and interpersonal skills. In addition, the chosen applicant must have the initiative to develop innovate solutions to the variety of complex logistical and managerial problems that will present themselves during the course of the position. Fundamental to the position are an ability to anticipate problems before they arise and to react quickly and efficiently under pressure. Applicants should be qualified SCUBA divers with a keen interest in marine biology and conservation. The position includes an initial 4 week in-field training period which will give the successful applicant time to familiarise his or herself with the workings of the site.

Field Science Coordinator
We currently have a vacancy for the position of field science coordinator at our research site in southwest Madagascar. The position is for a minimum period of 6 months, commencing as soon as possible. The role of the field science coordinator involves planning, directing and overseeing all marine, coastal and socio-economic research activities carried out at the research site, situated some 250km of the regional capital Toliara.
The selection, design and implementation of a comprehensive management plan for the Andavadoaka region is dependent on our having extensive knowledge of the species and habitats present and patterns of resource use, and being able to integrate these social, biological and economic data. Applicants should have the vision and initiative to manage an ambitious and diverse ecological and social research program as well as work towards conservation objectives including the development of locally managed marine protection areas and promoting alternatives to destructive fishing methods. In addition the successful applicant will be responsible for leading an international team of research volunteers and delegating research responsibility effectively.
The role will require co-ordinating research activities with local partners from the University of Toliara and Malagasy government agencies, as well as with local and international NGOs, working towards the development of local and regional coastal and marine research initiatives as a basis for informing future management decisions. The scientist will also be responsible for overseeing the activities of visiting researchers from national and international universities.
The successful applicant will be a dynamic individual with extensive experience of carrying out field research on coral reefs and related habitats. Experience of cetacean monitoring would be beneficial. He/she should be qualified to a minimum of PADI Rescue Diver level or equivalent, with a masters degree or equivalent in tropical marine ecology, coastal management, or suitable related discipline. Applicants must also have a good working knowledge of French. Experience of working in Madagascar is also highly desirable. Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Office, ArcView, MapInfo, computer system networking and database design, as well as experience of statistical analysis software.
Daily on-site responsibilities will include coordinating and leading research dives, managing the on-site database, and liasing with local community representatives, working in a remote and challenging environment. All living, travel and incidental expenses will be covered, and additional remuneration will be dependent on experience.

diving manager
We are currently seeking a Diving Manager to oversee and teach diving at our marine conservation and research programme in Andavadoaka, southwest Madagascar. The position is voluntary, and for a minimum period of 6 months.
A suitable candidate needs to be PADI OWSI and EFR with experience of working in tropical coral habitats and of certifying students. A knowledge of compressors, 4 stroke boat engines and basic mechanics is necessary. A background in marine biology is helpful but not necessary.
The Diving Manager will train staff and expedition volunteers. They will be directly responsible for the control of stock and maintenance of diving equipment as well as enforcing diving protocols and safety whilst on site. Full diving and equipment records need to be kept and regularly reported to the UK.
The position is voluntary for a minimum of 6 months. The candidate will increase the number of certifications (both normal and speciality) as well as increasing diving time in and increasing their knowledge of species within the Western Indian Ocean. They will also gain greatly from working with local peoples and scientists in training them to SCUBA dive.

medical officer
We are currently looking for an Medical Officer to provide health and safety and general treatment for our marine conservation and research programme in Andavadoaka, southwest Madagascar. The position is voluntary, and for a minimum period of 1 month, commencing July 2004.
The position involves providing health care to all staff and volunteers as well as emergency medical treatment and overseeing CASEVAC if the need arises. The role also requires maintenance of medical supplies and enforcement of on-site health and safety measures. A suitable candidate will also provide supervision to medical students on elective, provide team briefings on hygiene and basic first aid. A suitable candidate needs to be a qualified doctor, nurse or paramedic. A & E experience as well as a qualified diver to Advanced Open Water level is desirable but not essential. An experience of diving related illness would be of great help and knowledge of teaching first aid. Keeping accurate records is also essential and reports are submitted frequently to the home base.
The position is voluntary and will offer an opportunity to increase medical expedition experience in a tropical environment. The candidate will take part in normal day to day running of the camp and will have an opportunity to do surveys and work within the local community. An essential role will be assisting the Expedition Manager with the management of up to 15 international staff and volunteers.
Briefings and training are provided prior to departure and the candidate will have expert back up from the UK.
