Position: Graduate Fellow in GIS Research Lab

Description:
This fellowship position provides a unique opportunity to participate in the research and teaching mission of the Landscape Analysis Lab (LAL) at the University of the South, a highly selective liberal arts college in Sewanee, Tennessee. The LAL is a multidisciplinary team of faculty, staff and students investigating the ecological and socioeconomic impacts of land use in the Southeast U.S. For information on the University of the South and current research activities at the LAL please visit our websites at www.sewanee.edu and lal.sewanee.edu. =20 =20 The fellowship will include both teaching and research opportunities. The fellow will serve as the instructor for one undergraduate introductory course in GIS and remote sensing. The fellow will be given the responsibility of developing appropriate curriculum/project work for this course and other advanced courses using GIS. The fellow will also provide guidance/consultation for faculty that use GIS in the classroom or in their research, and will manage the LAL spatial data library. The fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on current LAL research projects. This research may be built upon previous studies completed by the LAL, or it may lead in new directions that are consistent with the mission of the LAL. =20 =20 Salary Range:

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Develop, plan and teach GIS course(s) and labs to be offered by
the Biology and Environmental Studies programs, and assist faculty in other interdisciplinary courses with a GIS component =20
2. Assist in the maintenance and development of the LAL GIS spatial
data library
=20
3. Conduct independent or collaborative research in environmental
sciences
=20
4. Continue outreach activities of the LAL to regional governmental
and non-governmental organizations and local communities
=20
Job Specifications/Position Qualifications (minimum):
=20
Education: MEM, MS, or MF required with
strong emphasis on GIS and remote-sensing coursework and/or research =20 =20
Experience: Instructional experience
preferred but not required. Research experience preferred: environmental or social sciences using GIS and/or remote-sensing techniques. Demonstrated skills in the application of GIS for analyzing real-world problems preferred. =20 =20
Job Related Skills: Ideal candidate will have strong
working knowledge of GIS using the ESRI ArcGIS software package. Thorough understanding of statistics and data analysis methods will be strongly valued.
