Project: The role of the cytokine IL-1F5 in immune responses to periodontal pathogens
Sponsor: The School of Dental Sciences
Supervisors: Dr Neil Foster, Dr Philip Preshaw and Dr John Taylor
Project Description: A PhD studentship is available from October 2004 in the Oral Microbiology and Host Responses Research Group ( http://www.ncl.ac.uk/dental/research/oral/periodontal.htm). The aims of the project are to investigate IL-1F5 expression in innate immune cells responsive to periodontal pathogens, to elucidate the effect of recombinant IL-1F5 protein on pro-inflammatory cytokine production in innate cells and to investigate the effect of IL-1F5 on the ability of antigen- pulsed myeloid cells to stimulate autologous T cells. This project will provide research training in a variety of cellular and molecular techniques relevant to applied immunobiology. The ideal candidate will have a first or upper second class honours degree in biological science and an interest in immunology. The stipend level is £10,500.
Applications including a CV and the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to Dr John J Taylor, Oral Biology, School of Dental Sciences, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Framlington Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 4BW. Tel: 0191 2228694, e-mail j.j.taylor@ncl.ac.uk.
Informal enquiries are encouraged.
