Subprogram Leader Aquaculture Environment SARDI Aquatic Sciences (South Australia)

We are seeking a motivated person to take a research leadership role in our Aquaculture Environment subprogram. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of achievement in marine ecology, as demonstrated by publications and grants, preferably with some knowledge of the aquaculture industry. A PhD (or equivalent experience) and postdoctoral experience are required. The appointee will take a leadership role in studies of the interactions between aquaculture and the environment, and will be expected to obtain external funding to maintain the subprograms activities. Currently, the group consists of 2 postdoctoral scientists, 3-4 research assistants, 2 PhD students and 1 honours student. Current research within the group focuses on the southern bluefin tuna industry (through the Aquafin CRC), with other projects covering yellowtail kingfish, oysters and abalone. Funding is obtained through the Aquafin CRC, Fisheries Research & Development Corporation, PIRSA Aquaculture (the state government managers) and direct from industry. We would be particularly interested in applicants who could act as PI on 1 of 2 projects currently being developed. The first is to develop an integrated hydrodynamic/biogeochemical model of the environment around Port Lincoln to examine interactions between tuna farming and the environment, and is being conducted in conjunction with CSIRO. The second is to examine oyster feeding dynamics. Both projects require some skills in ecological/ecosystem modelling.

SARDI Aquatic Sciences is a South Australian government research agency with responsibility for conducting research in marine and freshwater environments that enhances the State's economic growth and enables the conservation of natural resources for the people of South Australia. The organisation employs ~100 scientific staff, mostly based at West Beach in Adelaide, with some staff at Port Lincoln and Mount Gambier. This position will be based at West Beach, with the potential to relocate to Port Lincoln if desired. This is a contract position for 5 years, with reappointment dependent upon performance. Salary will be negotiated on the basis of experience and an attraction allowance may be offered to exceptional applicants.
