Job Description: The Important Bird and Birding Area (IBBA) Coordinator will oversee the second and final phase of the New Jersey Important Bird and Birding Areas Program, a program designed to identify and delineate essential avian habitat in New Jersey and focus on conserving those areas. This will include completion of the ongoing site nomination process and initiation of site-based implementation at identified IBAs. The New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS) is a privately supported, not-for profit, statewide membership organization. Founded in 1897, and one of the oldest independent Audubon societies, NJAS has no connection with the National Audubon Society.

Location: New Jersey, location flexible. Central/Southern Region Preferred.

Duties:
* Oversees Technical Committee meetings to review and approve nominated sites, and Advisory Committee meetings for guidance in developing conservation strategies for IBBA sites.
* Organizes site nominations, including identifying additional information needed, from ornithologists, agencies, and others.
* Assists with the development of site conservation plans at IBAs and participates in workshops and outreach activities with local landowners to explain these conservation plans.
* Works with Conservation department directors (Policy and Conservation) to integrate IBBA into existing and future projects.
* Creates GIS maps and interprets/updates recently completed GIS habitat analysis. Performs additional analyses as needed.
* Prepares several reports (including grant reports) culminating in the production of a New Jersey IBBA book, with detailed documentation of all IBBA sites and recommendations for conservation.
* Coordinate with land trusts, local governments, state government agencies and other conservation organizations to form partnerships to conserve IBA sites.
* Promotes advocacy and stewardship of IBBAs, encourages local citizen involvement, and initiates volunteer-based "citizen science" avian inventory and monitoring efforts.
* Works to communicate the IBBA Program goals and activities to the public through the media.
* Writes grant proposals and works with department staff to develop other funding mechanisms for the IBBA Program.
* Other duties as assigned by the Director of Conservation.

Qualifications:
* B.A./B.S. in wildlife biology, ornithology, natural resources, conservation planning or equivalent. Masters preferred.
* Strong background in conservation biology with an avian focus is preferred.
* Interest in developing state-wide and regional policy and stewardship recommendations for protection of IBAs.
* A motivated self-starter who is also a strong team player. Ability to organize complex projects with a variety of partners.
* Excellent writing (including grant writing) and speaking skills essential.
* Proficiency in a variety of software programs, especially GIS (e.g.
ESRI) and also including standard Microsoft software products, database development and maintenance with MS Access (and its applicability to ArcGIS). GPS experience is a plus.
* Knowledge and/or experience with classification and interpretation of remotely sensed imagery, and knowledge of advanced database programming skills is beneficial.
* Experience with web design software, publication development, and fundraising a plus.
* Must be willing to travel and work weekends and nights as required. Requires a reliable vehicle and a valid New Jersey Driver's License.

Starting Date: June 15, 2005. Permanent position, pending funding.
