Job Description: The Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) is seeking applicants for 3 seasonal avian field biologist positions to assist in the research and population monitoring of the San Clemente Sage Sparrow, a federally threatened, endemic subspecies on San Clemente Island (SCI), California. SCI is the southernmost Channel Island located 68 miles off the coast of San Diego.
Seasonal Avian Field Biologist duties include: 1) nest searching and monitoring; 2) territory spot mapping; 3) field identification and resighting of color-banded birds within study plots, along line transects and opportunistically; 4) vegetation sampling at nests, within territories and along line transects; 5) mist-netting and assisting in the banding of adults and nestlings; and 6) data management in ArcView GIS, Access and Excel. This position requires patience and sharp observation skills using spotting scopes and binoculars. SCI is owned and operated by the U.S. Navy as a training facility and personnel will be required to follow established military protocols and rules.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have earned a B.S. in wildlife biology, zoology, ecology or a related natural resources degree and have knowledge and experience in avian biology. One season of experience working in scrub or grassland habitat nest searching and banding/handling passerines is preferred. If hired, you will be asked to provide a banding resume. A valid driver’s license is required and experience operating manual full-sized 4-wheel drive trucks over rocky and muddy roads in dense fog is preferred. All employment offers are contingent on the insurability of the applicant by IWS so applicants may be asked to provide information to verify their driving record. Applicants should be comfortable hiking in rocky and cactus-covered terrain. There are several other research groups on island, so applicants should enjoy living as part of a small research community. Additional information regarding IWS research on SCI is available at [www.iws.org].
Compensation: Approximately $1700/month based on an hourly salary of $7.82 plus overtime when necessary. Also included are housing and food while on island and transportation to and from SCI on a twin-engine propeller plane flying out of the Coronado Naval Base in San Diego. The work schedule is 10 days on, 4 days off. No off-island housing is provided.
Application Procedure: To apply send a cover letter, resume and the names and contact information, including telephone number, email and work address, of 3 references to SARA KAISER at kaiser@iws.org (preferred) or 2515 Camino del Rio South Suite 334, San Diego, CA 92108. Please indicate ‘field assistant application’ in the subject heading. Application deadline is 15 December 2005, but applications will be reviewed as they are received.
