Paid Botany Internship

Chicago Botanic Garden, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, is looking for a botanist with strong field work skills to intern at the BLM Upper Snake Field Office in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Idaho Falls is located in southeast Idaho, approximately 100 miles west of Grand Teton National Park.

Internship begins late June or early July and lasts for 5 months.

Compensation is $750 each two weeks.

We are looking for a recent graduate who has strong plant identification skills, field work experience and excellent orienteering skills. The ability to use a GPS unit and GIS software is required.

Intern will need basic navigational skills, knowledge of GPS data collection and familiarity with manipulation of GPS (Trimble, Garmin, Magellan) data in a GIS (ArcGIS) database, database (Access) skills for building a databases and entering of data, photo formatting and editing skills, ability to identify and key plants (using ­­Flora of the Pacific Northwest & Intermountain Flora),
ability to operate a 4-wheel drive pick-up and ATV, willingness to work alone in remote work sites, may work in teams, physical ability to hike rough and steep terrain in all weather conditions (summer temperatures ranging from 40°F overnight to 110°F in the day), willingness to camp overnight alone in remote areas, and perform office duties when required.

· Ability to use a dichotomous key
· Ability to collect vegetation data
· Ability to effectively use a GPS unit
· Field and extended camping experience
· Ability to be in the field for long hours
· Map reading and orienteering proficiency

Requirements:

· BS or BA in Plant Biology or Ecology with a botanical focus
· US citizen or current visa to work in US
· Valid driver's license
· Vehicle needed for personal use, work vehicle is provided
