Context
The Tour du Valat is a Camargue-based research centre for the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. It
is run by a team of around sixty people. For over 50 years the centre has been developing projects covering
the entire Mediterranean basin. The projects aim to increase understanding of the processes responsible for
damaging wetlands, highlight and publicise the role played by wetlands, and propose management methods
for conserving their biodiversity and the sustainable management of their resources.
Concerned by the major problems faced by the Mediterranean basin wetlands, in 2006, Tour du Valat set up
a new five-year programme comprising three main branches: (1) an Observatory of Mediterranean wetlands,
(2) Integrated management and ecosystems dynamics, and (3) Global change and species dynamics. Each
programme is implemented by pluri-disciplinary teams working with key external partners.
