University of Freiburg, invites applications for a PhD research
position, pay grade E 13, 65%, on
Evaluating the evidence for Ecosystem Service quantification and
management
to start at the 1 December 2012 for a period of three years.
To operationalize the Ecosystem Services concept it is essential to
assess the appropriateness of the indicators, data and models employed (see Seppelt et al. 2011 J Appl Ecol 48: 633-636). This project will review the existing and developing ES studies for evidence of valid approaches for the respective ES applications (known as “level of evidence” in the medical literature). From this, new indicators and ranking approaches shall be developed and applied to case studies within a larger EU project.
The ideal candidate is interested to work at the interface of natural and social sciences. The focus will be very clearly on the natural sciences, but it requires consideration of the wider context and interactions with academic partners from the social sciences. Thus, a MSc (or equivalent) degree in any of the natural sciences, geography or sociology could be a good background. Since many evaluations require understanding of statistical analyses and environmental modelling, numerical skills are essential. Working language will be English and proficient writing and communication skills are expected.
The University of Freiburg is an equal opportunities employer and explicitly encourages qualified women to apply.
This position is subject to final confirmation of funding by the EU.
