A research associate’s duties comprise academic service for the following project: The Fu-ture Okavango (TFO), ESS position *
Area(s) of Responsibility:
The successful candidate will develop an integrated approach to analysis and valuation of ecosystem functions (ESF) and services (ESS) within the context of a transdisciplinary catchment study.
She/he will assemble spatial and qualitative data from natural and earth sciences in a GIS based landscape model of the Okavango catchment. Based on a sound understanding of ecosystem dynamics within the catchment, the candidate shall outline and model the resilience of the relevant ecological systems under current land use practices and assess the thresholds and probabilities for transitions to different ecosystem states. Furthermore, the successful candidate shall contribute to the transdisciplinary valuation of different development scenarios, using a GIS based Ecological Risk Analysis with regard to ecological integrity and water-, soil-, and biodiversity-related ecosystem services.
The development of integrated and transdisciplinary valuation methods will be done in close collaboration with subproject SP08 (ecological and economic valuation of ecosystem ser-vices) and the scientific coordination and synthesis project GLUES.
Requirements:
Academic degree in biology, ecology, geosciences or related academic fields plus excellent doctoral degree. Fluency in English and good knowledge of Portuguese or another Romance language.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an excellent understanding of ecological systems. The successful candidate should have expertise in interdisciplinary, spatial or con-ceptual modeling, proven expertise with geographical information systems and with ecologi-cal valuation concepts. Field experience in tropical or subtropical countries is advantageous.
