Job Description seek 1-2 field volunteers to work on behavioral research projects in Panama as part of a doctoral investigation of how habitat characteristics influence social structure and reproductive
dynamics lek-mating Red-capped Manakins (Ceratopipra mentalis). Fieldwork will include mist-
netting and banding birds, re-sighting color-marked birds, and behavioral observations and
experiments at male leks. Half the work will take place on Pipeline Rd in Soberania National Park and the other half will occur across the Isthmus of Panama. Field crew will live in Gamboa, Panama. This work is in collaboration with the University of Wyoming and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
Qualifications: B.A/B.S. degree in biology, some experience in bird identification and behavioral
observation. English fluency required, Spanish a plus. Must be in good physical condition and be able to endure long field days in a tropical setting. An ideal candidate will have interest in animal behavior, tropical ecology, and gaining experience in avian research techniques including: canopy netting, telemetry, and song analysis.
Compensation: Housing and within-country travel covered. Volunteers must cover travel costs to and
from Panama.
