PhD in population biology (Austria)

In collaboration with the Evolutionary Systematics group, the Population Biology and Vegetation Ecology group at the Institute of Botany offers a PhD position (m/f) in population biology, starting on June 1, 2016 limited to 3 years.
Your duties:
• Collect seeds of alpine species across the Austrian Central Alps and carry out germination experiments in the growth chamber, including pre-treatments, temperature and drought manipulations
• Test the germination variability within and between seed populations
• Conduct field experiments to test facilitative/competitive effects of established species on alpine-nival seeds and seedlings along elevation gradients in the Austrian Central Alps (Obergurgl, Ötztal)
• Conduct common garden experiments to test the effects of seed provenances
• Collaborate in the international project “Alpine Plant Conservation & Research Programme”, collect seeds for the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership and perform germination tests
Your profile:
• Excellent Master’s degree in Population/Vegetation Ecology
• Good knowledge of alpine species, plant ecology, population ecology
• Experience in experimental ecology and in the design of ecological experiments
• Experience with statistics
• Experience in high altitude field work
• Enthusiastic, well organized, with team spirit
