NSF Postdoctoral Scholar – Ocean acidification and coral reefs
Application deadline: open until filled (screening starting 1 July 2016)
Start date: negotiable: 22 August 2016
Salary: $50,000/y
Applications are invited for a 34 month NSF-funded postdoctoral scholar position at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), to conduct research in the area of ocean acidification (OA) and its effects on coral reefs. The successful candidate will work closely with RC Carpenter and PJ Edmunds (grant PIs, robert.carpenter@csun.edu and peter.edmunds@csun.edu) to investigate the effects of OA on corals, algae, and coral reefs in Moorea, French Polynesia. The research focuses on the ecophysiology of corals and algae, and spans investigative scales from organisms, to assemblages of species, and natural communities; experiments will involve microcosms, flumes, and in situ (field) analyses. Candidates are expected to have strong field-based experience with the ecophysiology of tropical corals and algae, a background in the biology/ecology/physiology of corals, algae, and reef communities, and experience in analytical seawater chemistry; scuba diving with AAUS training (or equivalent) is required. The research involves significant periods (up to 6 months/year) of work overseas in Moorea. This position provides unique opportunities to work with a small team studying the biology of coral reefs in the Caribbean and Pacific, and work with colleagues in the Moorea Coral Reef LTER.
The salary includes benefits, with additional funds to support travel and research in Moorea. Applicants should submit a covering letter in which they describe their research training and interests, CV, and arrange to have two letters of reference submitted. All applications must be made through the CSUN web site (see above).
