Marine pollution is one of the main issues of our time and sediment is one of the recommended matrix for the evaluation of marine pollution as it can act as a sink and a source of pollutants to the marine environment. The study of both natural and synthetic
pollutants gives the whole picture of what is happening and the future trends and harms. In this context and having into account that microplastics are recognized as persistent and ubiquitous contaminants in aquatic environments and as one of the major challenges of the 21st century, this is one of our focal interests at the moment. Plastics typically compose around 80% of marine litter and have accumulated at the sea surface, on the sea floor and on shorelines worldwide. Attempts to quantify microplastics in the marine environment are more recent and require improvement in the methods applied in monitoring programmes on the marine environment. Microplastics can act as a “passive sampler” accumulating persistent pollutants that can be then transferred either to biota that ingest them or to sediments where they settle....More info: http://eshorizonte2020.es/expressions-of-interests/lucia-vinas

The Group of Long-distance Fisheries (GLF) works in biology and stock dynamic of fish exploited by European fleet in Non-EU waters since the 80s and participates in stock assessment as Spanish representative. For that purposes, it carries out annual scientific surveys and coordinates the program of observers onboard of commercial vessels of the Spanish fleet operating in Non-EU waters for reporting data to the Data Collection Framework (DCF). Besides, it studies ecosystem from an integrative point of view (oceanography, life-history evolution, reproductive and trophic ecology, habitats, associated species, etc.) for the implementation of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management and the determination of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems. The GLF owns a complete laboratory of histology for gonad processing and a laboratory for sclerochronological studies with all the facilities required in the present project as well as highly specialized technicians and researchers.
