MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,428/Mon.
DUTIES: Works with the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division’s (CRED’s) multi-agency, inter-disciplinary program to support marine ecosystem research and conservation efforts, including surveys of fishes, corals, algae, invertebrates, marine debris, oceanographic conditions, and benthic habitats. Participates in research cruises and marine ecosystem surveys to assess, monitor and mitigate threats to the coral reef ecosystems of the U.S. Pacific Islands. Assists with all operational phases of the program to support this research, including planning, field surveys and mitigation, analyzing, and reporting. Works with the Principal Investigators to process, analyze, and summarize data from various coral reef research surveys and conservation projects. Assists in the preparation and analysis of summary statistics, presentation graphics, and reports of coral reef research and monitoring efforts. Assists in the preparation of scientific reports for publication and presentation and supports the program’s education and outreach efforts.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Zoology, Biology, Botany, Ecosystem Science, Oceanography, GIS, Computer Sciences, Ocean Engineering, or related field involving studies of marine science or coral reef ecosystems. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience with marine research projects which included working with scientific data, report writing, and marine underwater survey techniques or ocean engineering and development. Previous experience at sea for extended periods of time (two (2) weeks or more) aboard research or fisheries vessels. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of at least one (1) of the following areas: oceanographic processes, reef fish taxonomy, coral taxonomy, algal taxonomy, coral reef ecology, GIS applications, acoustic mapping, marine underwater survey techniques, or ocean engineering. Knowledge of statistical procedures to assist with data analyses pertaining to ecosystem processes. Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Must possess good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and make decisions on matters including repetitive tasks involving the use of computers and dissecting microscopes. Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision. Must be able to pass all training requirements, including but not limited to basic boating, first aid, CPR, and oxygen assistance. Other training requirements may include advanced coxswain training, advanced first aid, and forklift training. Ability to use statistical, analytical and presentation (including GIS) software. Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools, including word processors, spreadsheets, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Able to operate small boats. Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) and meet the standards established by the University of Hawai‘i’s and/or program’s diver certification process (which meets the standards set by the American Academy of Underwater Science) and hold the current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration, and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout duration of employment to assist with transporting equipment and gear. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet and maintain US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete SCUBA diving advanced open water certification and maintain throughout the duration of employment with a minimum of forty (40) dives and possess good free diving skills. Must be able to complete UH/NOAA diving certification, which includes meeting the physical, watermanship, academic, and experience requirements, and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain boat operator certification within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout period duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work long hours outdoors at various captive facilities and remote locations with high exposure to sunlight, aboard research vessels and aboard small boats (15-20’) in coastal and oceanic waters. Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds of scuba gear and equipment unassisted. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for NOAA diving requirements as well as for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout the duration of employment. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Ability and experience with identifying coral reef ecosystem organisms, particularly Indo-Pacific species, and quantifying abundances. Experience with Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and data. Previous experience in small boat handling and maintenance. Experience with outboard motors, SCUBA compressors, and repair of each.
