Job description:
PIBO’s Science Officer (SO) is responsible for all PIBO operations with an emphasis on science and research including but not limited to: administration, research, maintenance of PIBO field house, transportation and in conjunction with the Executive Director, staff and volunteer hiring and conduct.
The SO reports to the Executive Director.
The SO is a 44 hour per week position from April 1 to November 15. And a part time (20 hours per week) position from Nov 16- March 31.
Science Officer duties includes report writing, staffing, data management, and assisting the Executive Director and Board of Directors with fundraising.
The SO works part-time at writing (contributing to science journals and writing research grants) and research reporting from April to November.

In addition to managing the bird observatory and assisting the Board of Directors and Executive Director, the SO will:
Assist the Field Supervisor, Assistant Field Biologist and PIBO interns/volunteers as needed with all research and fieldwork operations from April to November. Between 50 – 75% of the SO’s workload from April to November involves fieldwork and the paperwork, data entry, and other duties associated with PIBO’s migration-monitoring program, summer breeding bird studies, and island education programs.
Develop and maintain a pollinator site on one of PIBO’s properties.
Contribute articles to the Auspice newsletter.
Mange and apply for field work permits and ensure permit conditions are adhered to.
Maintain PIBO vehicle and all relevant field gear.
Reside on the island from April – November (and live rent-free at the PIBO staff cottage during the nine-month field season).
The SO receives two weeks paid vacation as part of gross pay in the time period July 6th – July 31st.
Payment is made by cheque (minus deductions) biweekly.

Ideal Qualifications/Requirements:
Previous experience managing small profit or non-profit organization
Responsible for leadership and direction of the bird observatory
Mist – netting and bird banding experience; good knowledge of molt terminology, ageing and sexing for North American passerines.
Experience identifying Eastern North American birds by sight and sound
Above average verbal and written communication skills
Experience writing reports, articles, newsletters, preparing funding applications
Assist Field Supervisor with island education including bird banding demonstrations, visiting field naturalist and school groups
Assist Executive Director with development and implementation of a strategic plans, education programs, fundraising
Liaise with the PIBO Board of Directors and staff
Attend PIBO meetings, attend Canadian Migration Monitoring Network meetings every two years, and Ontario Bird Banding Association meetings annually
Coordinate with Executive Director on the year-round maintenance/supplies at three PIBO properties including water, electrical, mainland food shopping, transportation, staff relations and conduct, safety, community relations, etc.
Assist with the Birdhouse cottage rental (available to conduct birding tours to guests).
Assist with upkeep of the PIBO staff cottage and field station, help with shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc.
Responsible for ensuring all year-end reporting is completed by PIBO staff including data submission (the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network, the Canadian Bird Banding Office, OMNR), PIBO Year-end Report (by December 31st), newsletter summaries, migration summaries, etc.
Driver’s license and clean driving record
Oversee facilities maintenance, inspections and improvements including buildings, grounds and onsite equipment and insure the safety and security of PIBO staff and volunteers
Maintain a welcoming environment for visitors
Report on seasonal migration monitoring and long-term population studies, and other scientific papers using PIBO data. Prior publications in scientific journals is preferable.
