The Aquatic Ecosystem Research Programme (University of KwaZulu-Natal) is dedicated to the development of inland aquatic ecosystem scientific research through formal research outputs and post-graduate student training for the benefit of South Africans and our environment.
We are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to help with field work in the framework of two PhD projects from mid-January 2018 to mid-April 2018. The first one would involve intensive field trip (2 x 20 days) in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to conduct survey for freshwater eels. The field work will be quite physical. The second project would involve tracking fish movement through the use of remote and manual telemetry. Both projects would mean a lot of the volunteer time would be spent on the field and sometime with long hours (under warm South African weather !).

¥ It’s a great opportunity to gain experience in field ecology ! You’ll become acquainted with different techniques including : netting techniques, electro-shocking, GIS, tagging and radio-tracking.
¥ Possibility of participating in the writing and publication of papers associated with the two field projects.
¥ As we are part of a bigger research group (including wildlife conservation and territorial ecology), you will get the opportunity of joining other field trips, time permitting.
¥ You’ll get to work in beautiful areas !
Requirements :
¥ Bsc/honours degree in ecology, environmental sciences, zoology or similar
¥ Team spirit is essential but need to be able to work independently
