Description: Assist with hybridization study between Allen's (Selasphorus sasin) and Rufous (Selasphorus rufus) Hummingbird in coastal northern California and coastal southern Oregon. Position involves monitoring and recording of courtship behavior from territorial males, capturing target males, taking morphological measurements, and either collecting or drawing a blood sample, banding, and releasing each individual. Must be able to hike and camp in all weather conditions, especially rain. Term is expected to last 2-3 months. The stipend for this volunteer position is $3,000, meant to cover field expenses.
Qualifications: 1. Interest in evolution, hybridization, and animal behavior. 2. Remote camping experience. 3. Personal camping gear. 4. Experience banding, mist nets, measuring, and handling small birds preferred.
