Role Profile

ZSL is seeking an experienced, innovative and adaptable individual with management and global development or corporate experience to oversee a significant part of ZSL’s Asia Conservation Programme during an exciting time devising and delivering ZSL’s new strategy, 2018-2026. Reporting to the Head of the Asia, this position will manage a suite of country programmes based in the region and in London. This position is instrumental for ZSL Asia’s aim to further develop and support country programme leaders and projects that will deliver impactful conservation and habitat connectivity across many landscapes in Asia under a mosaic of management types, ensuring coexistence for the benefit of species and human communities. The successful candidate will understand how to leverage the importance of ecosystem management against pressures from economic drivers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Taking responsibility for leading key strategic, in-country project design and operational decisions in consultation with country staff, the Head of Asia Programmes and the Director of Conservation.
Developing and maintaining relationships with collaborators, stakeholders, governments and donors, ensuring that accurate and timely reports are available fulfilling key responsibilities on behalf of the Head of Asia and ZSL.
Overseeing the recruitment and management of staff, including performance monitoring, mentoring, and training.
Working closely with staff in country programmes and in London to develop projects and fundraising proposals that align with national strategies and deliver ZSL’s mission and country strategies.
Supporting external and internal representation and promotion of ZSL and its conservation work.
Overseeing programme staff management and administration are in full compliance with all ZSL legal, tax and financial reporting requirements and ensure budgets are appropriately managed and forecasted
Representing ZSL specifically at national and international conferences and workshops as needed.

Person Specification

This is a management level position which requires proven experience in the delivery and development of conservation programmes. The successful applicant will have a track record of strategic programme development, managing senior staff and researchers especially with knowledge of large-scale, long term community and commercial sector engagement programmes that have significant policy influence in protecting national capital and ecosystem services. The successful candidate will have experience in securing and managing funds from a range of funding sources and experience of developing and managing relationships with partners, donors and field teams.

Candidates should also have:
Post-graduate study in a related field relevant to large-scale conservation planning and with current knowledge and an active network to bring to the role
Proven people management, coaching and capacity building/development skills.
Excellent understanding and experience in developing partnerships, fund-raising, donor strategies, functions, governmental and international relations.
Strong skills in grant contract oversight including project planning, financing, quality assurance and management, monitoring and evaluation.
A good knowledge and understanding of current international and Asia-specific biodiversity conservation issues with skills in strategic thinking and decision-making to communicate project impacts.
Demonstrated experience developing and evaluating strategic plans and policy is highly desirable.
Experience working in the region and representing conservation to various audiences is highly desirable.
An excellent standard of written and spoken English. Additional languages from the region are highly desirable.
