We are looking for a PhD student to work on topics related to molecular mechanisms of coral resilience to environmental stress and resistance to disease. Widespread coral mortality throughout the Atlantic and Caribbean has led to a loss of essential reef habitat and significant impairment of
ecosystem function. Despite this, some coral species and genotypes have demonstrated an ability to survive in adverse environmental conditions.
Identification of resilient coral genotypes and elucidation of the molecular pathways by which this resilience operates can inform management, potentially increasing the efficacy of reef restoration efforts. As such, this project will combine aspects of laboratory and field ecology with molecular biology, including genomics and transcriptomics.
The position is for five years, at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS
<https://www.rsmas.miami.edu/>) and is supported through the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Omics Initiative. Research
will be conducted at RSMAS in the Traylor-Knowles Lab
<http://www.cnidimmunitylab.com/> and the Experimental Reef Lab

as well as NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML
<https://www.aoml.noaa.gov/>), through the Cooperative Institute for Marine
and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS <https://cimas.rsmas.miami.edu/>).
The successfully applicant must be highly motivated and organized, have an
exemplary academic record, and a demonstrated passion for marine science.
Prior experience with coral reef ecosystems and molecular techniques is
preferred but not required. The position start date is for Fall 2019.
The student will be jointly advised by Drs. Ian Enochs and Nikki
Traylor-Knowles, at NOAA/AOML and University of Miami/RSMAS, respectively.
