BACKGROUND
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is looking for a dynamic, results-driven communications professional with excellent writing and editing skills. The successful candidate will be able to research, draft and edit substance-rich content quickly and to the highest standards. We are looking for a self-starter who excels under pressure and is able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Media and Communications Manager – Global Communications Unit, the Communications Officer will carry out the following tasks:
1. Content creation - writing and editing
• Produce high-quality, substance-rich written content including statements, policy briefs, press releases, talking points, speeches and blog posts
• Commission, edit, fact-check and proofread content
• Liaise with a wide variety of IUCN experts, members and partners
• Ensure positioning and key messages are reflected in content
2. Content coordination and monitoring
• Liaise with the IUCN global communications network in programmes and regional offices, coordinate upcoming content and provide guidance to ensure quality of outputs
• Oversee a calendar of upcoming content
• Oversee editorial projects such as the IUCN Annual Report
• Help plan and implement communications support for major events including IUCN World Conservation Congresses, Convention on Biological Diversity, Climate COPs
• Liaise with translators when necessary
3. Research and fact-finding
• Research, fact check, proofread and ensure accuracy of communications outputs
• Work with colleagues throughout IUCN Secretariat and in IUCN commissions to source information for use in various outputs (e.g. op-eds, speeches, web stories, etc.)
• Conduct external research where necessary
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
The above job description contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. However, in a small organisation such as IUCN, staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them, but which are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of an employee's responsibilities, the job description will be changed in consultation with the employee and the Human Resources Management Group.
REQUIREMENTS
• 3-5 years’ experience in a similar communications position. Experience of working in a similar organisation is an asset;
• University degree, preferably at the Master’s level, in International Relations, Public Affairs, Journalism or similar relevant field;
• Outstanding writing and editing skills; strong attention to detail; ability to turn technical information into compelling stories;
• English – native level; French and Spanish – an advantage;
• Experience in managing editorial projects desirable;
• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Confidence in interacting with IUCN experts, external partners and journalists, and in representing IUCN;
• Offers new solutions to problems; demonstrates an ‘outside the box’ attitude; takes an interest in new ideas and new ways of doing things;
• Commitment to continuous learning. Keeps abreast of new developments in own profession; actively seeks to develop oneself professionally and personally; contributes to the learning of colleagues; shows willingness to learn from others; seeks feedback to learn and improve.
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from CHF 86'330 to CHF 107'913, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax.
