If you’re a highly motivated person this is an opportunity to work with a productive, enthusiastic and collaborative research team as we measure plant thermal tolerance in the desert and alpine to inform conservation and management actions.

Position Overview

We are looking for an energetic, motivated person to join an outstanding team of plant biologists and conservation practitioners to study the thermal tolerance of alpine and dryland species in the context of threatened ecological community management. A strong academic record and degree or relevant background/skills in plant husbandry, ecology, evolution and/or physiology are required. Extensive field campaigns in the drylands and alpine areas of NSW are the core of this project, so experience of the challenges of, and desire to work in, field conditions are necessary.

The research Assistant will contribute to an Australian Research Council (ARC) supported project “Living on the Edge: How do Australian plants cope when pushed to their limits?” Desert and mountain species live at the thermal limits of biological processes and are exposed to both very low and very high temperatures. Those thermal ranges are becoming ever more variable and extreme. Our project will explore drivers and predictors of thermal tolerance. The project aims to identify species most resilient and most at risk under climate change and to inform effective management of threatened ecological communities.
