Sea-ice researcher position in Norway

The Nansen Center is an independent non-profit research foundation located in Bergen, Norway. We conduct multidisciplinary research with a focus on the marine environment, cryosphere and atmosphere, where scientific activities are closely integrated with innovation and service development. The Arctic is one of our main areas of attention. NERSC takes an active part in training and capacity building for students and young scientists, as well as dissemination to stakeholders in public and private sector and society in general. We have an international workplace with some 70 employees from 28 nations.

The vacant position

The Nansen Center has a vacant full time, temporary position as postdoc or researcher, depending on the applicant’s qualifications and ambitions. The duration of the position is two years, with a possibility of extension depending on future funding.

The position is linked to ongoing and upcoming national and international research projects focusing on ice–ocean interaction in a coupled ice–ocean model. These rely on analysing the output of the newly developed coupled NEMO–neXtSIM model, as well as proposing and setting up new experiments with that model system if necessary. NeXtSIM is a relatively new sea-ice model under development at NERSC. It is unique in terms of both physics and numerics and has been shown to give outstanding results in simulating Arctic sea-ice deformation. The successful applicant will study the first simulations of the coupled NEMO-neXtSIM model. The main scientific tasks will be to study air–sea fluxes through leads, the Arctic sea-ice mass budget, and the role of ice heterogeneity in water mass formation and mixed layer evolution.

The work will be carried out within the Sea ice modelling research group at the center (https://www.nersc.no/group/sea-ice-modelling), and in collaboration with collaborators at IGE in Grenoble (France) and IFREMER in Brest (France).

Responsibilities
Completion of scientific tasks set out in the relevant project proposals
Presentation of scientific results in journal articles and conferences
Participation in writing new proposals, should the occasion rise

Qualifications
PhD in oceanography, climate science, or related disciplines
Experience with analysing ice and ocean model outputs
Experience running and working with coupled ice–ocean models
