Within the Centre for Research-based Innovation "Technologies for sustainable biomarine value creation” (SFI HARVEST) we are now announcing two PhD fellowships of three years at UiT The Arctic University of Tromsø. The SFI HARVEST is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and both positions are connected to the Centre for Research-based Innovation. Both PhD candidates will be working at the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics. This position is affiliated with the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time, preferably as soon as possible. The PhD fellows have the opportunity and are encouraged to stay for 1-2 months at SFI host research institution SINTEF Ocean AS in Trondheim.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years. UiT offers an international research environment with world class research on polar ecosystems. The PhD candidates will have the opportunity to join the research network ARCTOS and will be able to participate in the ARCTOS PhD school.

This PhD position in Biological Oceanography is allocated to Research Area 2 (RA2) of SFI HARVEST: Understand and predict ecosystem dynamics to provide information and knowledge needed for sustainable fisheries management and harvesting. The other available position, PhD position in fishing gear technology, is allocated to Research Area 4 (RA4): Develop cost-efficient and environmentally friendly harvesting and onboard processing technologies.

The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment.
The position's field of research

The position is centred around questions addressing spatial and temporal variability of zooplankton populations in the Norwegian Sea and adjacent seas. One of the focus species in RA2 is the copepod Calanus finmarchicus. The PhD candidate is expected to join research cruises to the Norwegian Sea and adjacent seas during which a variety of sampling will be performed. The candidate is expected to collect and analyse own data from modern oceanographic instruments such as optical plankton counters, acoustical echosounders and satellites. During the PhD it will also be possible for the candidate to gain experience in ecosystem modelling.

The candidate is expected to participate in science communication events (i.e. conferences and workshops) and is encouraged to spend time abroad at one (or more) of the international partner institutions in the centre.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or equivalent degree in Biology.
• An interest in analysing large data sets using programming languages Python or Matlab is required, and experience in this direction is an advantage.
• Previous experience from research cruises is considered beneficial.
• Experience or knowledge with experimental design and research methodology, field work and collection of data (onboard vessels) and experience with analysis of data and general statistics is valuable for the position.
• Scientific publishing experience will be acknowledged.
• Documented knowledge of English as stated here is required and working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is desirable.
• In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD.

Qualification with a Master’s degree is required before commencement in the position. If you are very near completion of your Master’s degree, you may still apply and submit a draft version of the thesis and a statement from your supervisor or institution indicating when the degree will be obtained. You must document completion of your degree before commencement in the position.

Emphasis will be put on the candidate’s potential for research, motivation and personal suitability for the position.

A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the PhD Fellow has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position PhD Fellow, research assistant, or the like in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
