The newly founded Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science at the University of Vienna is comprised of 15 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science assembles an international, ambitious and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.
The Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science is looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic PhD student in the field of microbial ecology.
Application documents should include a letter of motivation, an academic curriculum vitae, and degree certificates.
Active participation in research, teaching and administration is expected. This includes:
- Involvement in a research project on the ecophysiology of nitrifying microorganisms
- Publications and presentations
- Involvement in project applications for third-party funding
- Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of trainees and students
Eligibility criteria
- Diploma or master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, or equivalent qualification
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
- Excellent team-working ability
- Very good knowledge in microbiology, especially microbial physiology.
- Practical experience in microbiology and molecular biology. Methods such as PCR and qPCR, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and other fluorescence labelling techniques, fluorescence microscopy, bioreactor setup and operation.
- In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have very good communication and organizational skills.
