We are looking for highly motivated graduate students interested in pursuing a PhD degree in Marine Biogeography in the research group BIOISLE – Biodiversity and Islands (https://cibio.up.pt/research-groups-1/details/bioisle) at CIBIO-Azores/InBIO (MPB - Marine Palaeontology and Biogeography lab, University of the Azores; https://www.researchgate.net/lab/MPB-Marine-Palaeontology-and-Biogeography-lab-Sergio-P-Avila) and at CIBIO-InBIO (University of Porto; https://cibio.up.pt/).
The selected candidate will be awarded a PhD grant funded by Air Centre (https://www.aircentre.org/), which is already secured by MPB team, and will register in the BIODIV – Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution – PhD program at the University of Porto, Portugal. Fieldwork will be done at the Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Cabo Verde archipelagos.
The successful Student will integrate the BIOISLE – Biodiversity and Islands – research group at CIBIO-Açores/InBIO, and the PhD project is expected to start in March/April 2021.

Required qualifications:
- A Master (MSc) degree in Biology, Evolution, Genetics, Ecology, Palaeontology or related fields is required. If any of the stated degrees was obtained abroad, the formal recognition of the degree in Portugal and the conversion of the obtained grades to the Portuguese scale are required (more information at https://www.dges.gov.pt/en/pagina/degree-and-diploma-recognition).
- Candidates should be highly motivated and demonstrate strong interest in Island Biogeography, Marine Biology and/or Evolutionary Biology.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a background in biogeography, evolutionary and population genetics; experience in the analyses of high-throughput sequencing data; and a track record demonstrating these skills.
- Good writing and communication skills in English, excellent teamwork skills, and ability to work independently.
- Diving experience and scuba-diving certification is advisable, although not mandatory.
