A Science Writer is required to join the team producing Science for Environment Policy. The person appointed will contribute to a range of materials produced by the Science for Environment Policy service: (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/integration/research/newsalert/index_en.htm) including writing articles for the weekly electronic News Alert, writing policy briefs as required, and participating in systematic content selection for the service.
Science for Environment Policy is produced by the Science Communication Unit, UWE, and published on behalf of the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment. The weekly news service is distributed free to over 20,000 subscribers and presents accessible summaries of scientific papers for environmental policymakers in Europe. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a vibrant team dedicated to facilitating the transfer of research knowledge to the policy community in Europe.
About you: We are looking for experienced writers with a practical understanding of writing about science for a non-expert audience. Experience of writing for policy audiences and to weekly deadlines is desirable. All applicants must have good attention to detail, familiarity with working directly from scientific papers and with referencing conventions, and a flair for accurate, accessible and engaging communication in written form.
You will have excellent time-management and organisational skills, demonstrate the ability to meet targets and deadlines (including with longer pieces of writing), and must also have the initiative to read, absorb, and produce complex scientific content within exact timeframes. Demonstrable interest and familiarity with environmental research or policy topics will be beneficial in this role.
You will need a degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience. A postgraduate qualification in Science Communication or similar will be beneficial, as will experience of editing.
All material produced by the writer must place research in a suitable policy context. It must match the style of material currently produced by Science for Environment Policy, and be suited to an international audience of policymakers and other interested, but not expert, users of research, e.g. industry audiences.
