Full-Time Research Assistant / Laboratory Manager is available in Fall 2021 in the Zhuang Lab (https://fulbright.uark.edu/departments/biology/directory/index/uid/xz036/name/Xuan+Zhuang/),
Department of Biological Sciences, University of Arkansas. Research interests in the Zhuang Lab include: Genetic basis of variation for complex traits and diseases; Evolution of genetic novelty and diversity; Molecular mechanisms of gene formation and gene loss. Investigations involve comparative genomics, molecular evolution, quantitative genetics, and bioinformatics, in model (fruit flies) and non-model organisms (polar fishes).
Job Description
As a lab manager, the candidate will assist the PI to set up a new lab and support the laboratory research requirements of the lab, including new equipment ordering and testing, protocol development, equipment maintenance, supply stock ordering, and basic administrative duties. As a research assistant, the candidate will assist the PI with conducting fruit fly experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and be responsible for maintaining fly stocks. The candidate will work directly with the PI and will have opportunities to participate in research seminars; attend conferences; collaborate on publications; and supervise undergraduate researchers. The position offers excellent benefits and a friendly working environment. The research assistant will be appointed for a one-year term, with reappointment possible based on performance and funding availability.
Minimum Requirements
- B.S. or M.S. in Biology or related fields.
- Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
- Demonstrated excellence in organization, attention to detail, and keeping thorough and up-to-date records.
- Ability to manage several tasks, keeping all on track and organized.
- Experience being a lab manager, or setting up new lab with PI.
- Experience working with fruit fly or fish.
- Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment, and using Python, R, etc.
- Molecular biology lab skills and genomic data analyzing experience.
