Field Research Scientist

About the role
Basecamp Research is looking for a Field Research Scientist to join the Field Science team. The position will be focused on planning and leading expeditions to biodiversity hotspots around the world and collecting data on the microbial diversity of these locations in situ.
This role has a large focus on molecular biology techniques and DNA extraction methods whilst in the field. As a field research scientist you will be working closely with leading experts in our passionate team spanning data science, biotechnology, and biodiversity engagement.
Role & Responsibilities
Field expeditions: plan and execute expeditions to biodiversity sites where Basecamp Research has acquired permits and partnerships for sampling. Expedition work can range from a day to multiple weeks, and entails: Safety-conscious work in the field (hiking, boating, driving, diving, etc) to access sites for sampling
Careful metadata and sample collection in the field
DNA extraction and further metadata collection in the mobile lab
Further molecular biology work upon return to Basecamp lab in London
Planning logistics for travel and accommodation, etc, to and throughout the expedition
Project management: Identify, prioritise, and work with sampling and biodiversity partners around the world to coordinate permitting, sample collection, and validation
Coordinate DNA biobanking in London and sequencing efforts
Work with research groups to plan and execute sampling and sequencing work into insights of value to biodiversity partners, and develop into academic publications to further knowledge in the field
Protocol development: Work with data science team to identify areas for molecular biology protocol development, for example extraction from new sample types
Carry out lab experiments with good optimisations and record keeping
The ideal candidate will have: Preferred background: General Life or Environmental Sciences backgrounds are preferred (e.g. ecology (particularly soil ecology), microbiology, molecular biology, molecular ecology, marine studies, geology, climate studies, or earth sciences).
Interpersonal skills: great communications across internal teams and external partners, ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, ability to juggle multiple projects, excitement for exploring biodiversity and creating novel commercial products from previously unexplored biology,
Field skills: Experience in safe use of scientific or technical equipment in the field / remote locations. Experience in planning and executing sampling field work.
Other desirable experience: General molecular biology or microbiology skills (incl. DNA extraction, processing, and sequencing and sample preparation). Experience of working with biosecurity, lab administration (inventory, risk assessments, organisation), permitting.
Working Style Based in London (non-remote)
Field expeditions range in timing, but average would be one - two weeks a month.
