Leopard Monitoring Field Technician
Panthera is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of big cats in their natural habitat (www.panthera.org). We are seeking a candidate to manage and run camera trap ongoing surveys at reserves in Limpopo, North West, and Mpumalanga provinces in 2022, with potential for expansion into the Eastern Cape. This is a field-based position, and the candidate will thus be expected to work independently with minimal supervision for prolonged periods. The candidate will be expected to set up and maintain camera trap surveys at five different reserves during the year, as well as assisting with Panthera surveys at other reserves when required. The work can be strenuous and will involve lengthy days in the field in hot conditions, and a reasonable degree of physical fitness is therefore required. Accommodation whilst in the field (majority of the role) will be provided.
Job description Set up, maintain (data downloads and battery changes) and take down camera trap surveys at sites designated by Panthera in order to facilitate leopard population monitoring, as well as providing necessary assistance to camera trap surveys run by partner organisations.
Ensure that all metadata specified by Panthera is correctly collected and curated for all surveys for which you have full or partial responsibility.
Maintain good relationships with reserve managers, staff, and partner organisations.
Ensure that all project equipment, including vehicles are regularly maintained and kept in good working condition
Manage fieldwork budget and expenditure reporting.
Requirements B.Sc. degree in nature conservation or a related field
Ability to work independently for long periods
A minimum of 2 years of demonstrable relevant fieldwork experience
Experience in running camera trap surveys
Meticulous record-keeping and attention to detail
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (especially Word and Excel)
Strong written English skills
Physically fit
Code B driver’s license (4x4 driving experience is required)
