Short-term Field Assistank: Tree, insect, & bird ecology - Spring 2023
We are seeking to appoint 6-7 field assistant to work on the Wytham Tit Project in spring 2023.
Three or four 2-month posts will assist with the collection of the long-term great tit and blue tit breeding data. Duties will include (i) collecting standardised data from nest-box breeding populations of tits, (ii) ringing parents and nestlings, (iii) collecting great tit song recording and (iv) inputting data collected in the field. These two-month positions with run from approximately
Monday 3’d April to Friday 2nd June.
Three 3-month posts will assist with the collection of phenological data for trees and phytophagous insects. Duties will include (i) assisting with drone flights to collect remotely- sensed tree phenology data, (ii), collecting data on the timing of spring budburst of deciduous trees and the abundance of phytophagous insects, (iii) carrying out habitat surveys, and (iv) inputting data collected in the field. These three-month positions will run from approximately Monday 6th March to Friday 2"d June.
All fieldwork will take place in Wytham Woods, near Oxford. The work is variable in intensity and will at times require long (12 hour+) days in the field, and working some weekend days, but will be quieter towards the start and end of the season. Successful applicants can choose between having accommodation provided on site and receiving a salary of £1,750/£1,900 per month (single/shared bedrooms) or finding their own accommodation and receive a salary of £2,360 per month.
Successful candidates for the two-month posts must hold or be qualified to obtain a BTO ringing permit. For the three-month posts, experience collecting phenological data and working with drones is desirable, but not essential. Furthermore, all successful candidates must be able to demonstrate skill and enthusiasm for ecological research as well as experience of fieldwork under arduous conditions, and of both lone fieldwork and working as part of a team.
