Lead field technician
We are hiring one lead field technician position for American pika population ecology field work in Glacier National Park (GNP), Montana, June 15 – October 10, 2023. The lead tech will work closely with the fieldwork coordinator who has more than eight summers of experience traversing and conducting research in the backcountry of GNP. The crew will include two additional field techs and several volunteers. The research involves daytrips or 2–4-night backpacking trips (in groups of two) to conduct walking surveys of previously identified American pika habitat. The work involves substantial off-trail travel, often over challenging terrain. A typical day would include 4-12 miles of hiking and 1000-4000 feet of elevation gain. Some situations require scrambling up mountainsides and exposure to very steep terrain. However, no technical climbing skills are required. The successful applicant must have substantial experience in backcountry hiking and camping, be comfortable with the required level of physical exertion, and have outstanding navigational skills with GPS, and map and compass. Leadership skills are also strongly desired, as the lead field tech has a critical leadership role in the crew. They should be comfortable guiding less experienced crew members in the basics of backcountry travel and camping, especially for the first half of the summer. We will provide housing near the edge of GNP and a fueled vehicle for travel to and from sites. Compensation is $10,800. We prefer an applicant who is available for the entire duration of the summer fieldwork season and is interested in the same position for summer 2024. those four months but may be extended to the full four. Strong preference goes to applicants available
through the month of September.
