At the Center for Advanced Studies in Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) we are seeking a postdoc degree to carry out research at the group of Theoretical and Computational Ecology within the research line ‘Use of novel technologies and citizen science as an early warning system to tackle mosquito-borne diseases”. Specifically, the work will be located in the frame of the further development and implementation of the Mosquito Alert Citizen Science Observatory (www.mosquitoalert.com) as well as within several R+D EU projects aiming to gain further knowledge on the ecological mechanisms involved in disease transmission by mosquitoes in the genera Culex and Aedes, and at different scales (citywide, regional and nationwide). In particular, we want to focus on evaluating ecological connectivity/barriers to disease spread or spillover across landscape gradients, with new experimental data. We want to test marking, release, and capture methods to estimate the dispersal capabilities of mosquitoes (vectors), and use sensors to help us understanding the movement patterns of targeted birds, potential hosts of arboviruses, in complex mosaic landscapes. Operation will take place under supervision and help by the scientific coordination team in Mosquito Alert and its present team, using internal resources from the Center and from the CSIC. In view of this, we are seeking an expert person on vector ecology and entomology, in possession of field and data analysis experience, all of this preferably related to mosquitoes of public health interest.
The person should be enthusiastic, proactive and innovative; should be resolutive and teamworking, to enter a multidisciplinary team to develop the following tasks: Developing mosquito sampling-based models at a regional scale emphasizing work on time and spatial scales, in urban context as well as in natural environments. Designing and carrying out field sampling campaigns with purposes on monitoring, ecology as well as dispersal study.
Candidates must have MsC, BsC and Doctorate on Biology, Environmental sciences and alike. Knowledge on vector taxonomy and ecology Leadership abilities for scientific publications A plus would be Proficiency in English language Data sharing and visualization, map building experience, knowledge on GIS What do we offer? Full time position at the Doctor FC2 level, with a gross salary of 43.813,75€ The work place is the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) from the CSIC.
We offer timetable flexibility and possibility of working from home (following AGE rules), but only sporadically because physical presence is required by the nature of the tasks, which are going to be taking place in the province of Girona. Starting date would be negotiated. Integrating a highly dynamic, multidisciplinary team of technical and scientific persons skilled in ecology, biology and environmental science, public health, data analysis, artificial intelligence, outreach, and social science. This is a chance to work in reference projects both at the national and international level, coordinating with Spanish and international Public Health Agencies, and with CSIC, CREAF, UPF as well. Candidates should send résumé and a presentation letter to the email address fbartu@ceab.csic.es before February 28th, 2023. A letter of Expression of Interest will be appreciated as well.
