PhD position: Bats and birds as sentinels to align rice production and biodiversity conservation
The role
We are offering a 3- or 4-year PhD position to work on the EU-funded project System-based Environmental Risk Assessment (SYBERAC). This thesis will be supervised by Dr. Ana López-Antia from the Environmental Chemistry Department of the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC). The project aims to enhance the sustainability of rice production by developing strategies to assess the risks of pesticides used in this crop on biota, employing bats and birds as sentinel organisms. To achieve this goal, we will assess both the direct effects produced by chemical exposure on bats and birds, as well as the indirect effects on populations resulting, for instance, from the reduction of food and habitat. Additionally, we will explore alternative management measures focused on reducing pesticide use and/or mitigating their effects while maintaining crop productivity
What do we look for?
● Qualifications
We welcome applicants with an MSc degree in biology, veterinary medicine, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, chemistry, or a related field
● Professional experience
Previous laboratory and/or field experience is not required but valued. Good English proficiency required.
● Competences
This is a multidisciplinary position that involves a combination of laboratory and fieldwork. Therefore, candidates with experience in both wildlife fieldwork and analytical chemistry laboratory work will have an advantage. Proficiency in GIS and R programs will also be highly valued.
Working conditions
● Contract duration: 3 year (with the possibility of a 4th year depending on progress)
● Estimated annual gross salary: 30,306 € per year (full time job)
