Job description:

Research Technician

Reference: BIOPOLIS 2024-03
Main research field: Biological Sciences
Sub research field: Forest ecology

1. We are seeking to recruit a research technician (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-03) under a work contract for a non-fixed term for an expected duration of one year, renewable up to a maximum of three years, to support activities of scientific research and knowledge transfer within the project wildE (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D1-02-05, Grant Agreement No. 101081251), funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme.

The project wildE (https://www.wilde-project.eu/) introduces climate-smart rewilding as an innovative restoration approach to create climate benefits while also addressing other socio-environmental needs. The project gathers a multi-disciplinary team of leading European experts to develop a research and innovation programme addressing the climate-biodiversity nexus in tight association with the socio-economic dimension of large-scale restoration. The team will also project scenarios to assess Europe’s rewilding potentials under diverse land-use and climate change futures. wildE will (i) generate comprehensive case-comparative data on European rewilding trends and outcomes, (ii) quantify the net social, economic and environmental benefits, synergies and trade-offs related to rewilding and alternative land-use options; (iii) develop cutting-edge projections for future land use and climate scenarios; and (iv) develop tangible and readily accessible decision-support and management guidelines to enable policymakers, conservation managers, communities, and the private sector to co-construct climate-smart rewilding strategies as effective nature-based solutions (NbS) for meeting the EU’s climate and biodiversity targets. Embedded within an ambitious stakeholder engagement, communications programme, wildE research will enable climate-smart rewilding as operational large-scale NbS to effectively foster the natural capacity of Europe’s ecosystems for climate change mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity support.

The candidate will provide technical support to a case study to be conducted in central Portugal, and collaborate in other tasks of the wildE project. Specifically, the successful candidate will support field work in characterizing changes in biodiversity indicators (e.g., plants, vegetation, soil microbiome), carbon sequestration, wood and non-wood forest products, among other relevant ecosystem services and disservices (e.g., wildfires), in relation to different rewilding/restoration scenarios. The candidate will also support tasks related to the analysis of the feasibility, costs and benefits of each scenario at the landscape scale, as well as contributing to the study of stakeholder preferences towards and acceptability of alternative management scenarios. This work will involve exploring how such preferences and acceptability are affected by information on trade-offs between objectives, and the landscape consequences of meeting different objective portfolios, based on the achieved results. The successful candidate will be involved in the identification of stakeholders and mapping of their influence and interest in the project, and in the building of a communication plan to help in planning activities with engaged stakeholders (e.g., workshops, field trips to study sites) or open to the community (e.g., cultural events, local conferences).

2. Applicable Legislation: Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its actual form.

3. The selection panel will be formed by: Francisco Moreira (Researcher at CIBIO-InBIO, President of the selection panel by delegation of the Director of Associação BIOPOLIS), Pedro Beja (Associate Director of Associação BIOPOLIS) and Ricardo Ceia (Researcher at CIBIO-InBIO).

4. The successful candidate will be based on one of CIBIO-InBIO poles, either in Vila do Conde (Campus de Vairão, 4485-661 Vairão) or Lisbon (Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Tapada da Ajuda, 1349-017 Lisbon), but other locations may exceptionally be negotiated. Field work will take place primarily in central Portugal (Municipalities of Seia, Góis and São Pedro do Sul), but occasional visits to other sites may also take place.

5. The gross monthly salary corresponds to Level 21 of the Consolidated Table of Allowances (TRU) 1649,14€ before tax.

6. Applications can be submitted by candidates of any nationality holding a BSc in Biological Sciences or equivalent areas.

7. Skills and competencies:
i) experience in forest ecology, including forest inventory, biodiversity conservation, carbon stocks and
production issues in a forestry context and multi-purpose forest management;
ii) experience in public engagement activities (stakeholder consultations and assessment of social perceptions);
iii) experience in using GIS to plan and conduct fieldwork;
iv) driving license, and experience in off road driving conditions.

The candidate should be able to work well within a team and have excellent English and communication skills.
Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate possesses strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

8. Candidates will be ranked based on:
i) The relevance of work experience for the announced position (75%)
ii) Motivation for applying to this position (25%)

9. Candidate final classification shall be given based on a scale 0 to 100.

10. The jury will interview (in person or by videoconference) to establish the final ranking if the difference between the classification of the top two candidates is less than 10 points (based on the criteria in 7). The jury may not award the position if the profile of the candidates does not meet the requirements of the project.

11. Application formalization:
11.1 The applications are formalized at the electronic address http://www.cibio.pt. The following documents are required in a digital form (PDF format):
i) Curriculum vitae;
ii) Motivation Letter (including a brief description of research experience and why you are suitable for the announced position);
iii) Qualifications Certificates;
iv) Other relevant documentation
11.2. The application period is from 4th January 2024 to 12th January 2024.

Expected starting date: 1st February 2024
