ReTree's purpose is to protect and strengthen nature against climate change.
We do this by offering conscious and innovative solutions to business (B2B) to reforest areas in risk of desertification. We plant a variety of local species of trees and bushes that help offsetting carbon, generating biodiversity, and impacting local communities.
Our approach involves monitoring the CO2 absorbed by every tree we plant using our in-house algorithm that estimates the tons of carbon offset, the weeks of rural employment generated and the positive impact in terms of water resources.
We are a team of 11 people based in Madrid and after 3 years in the business we are now looking for a person (she/he/them) to help us grow our technological development and expanding into new services, always related to climate change.
Your Role:
This is a full-time Researcher and Developer Scientist role with ReTree, based in Madrid with a hybrid working strategy (remote and in office). This position will report to our CEO, Founder & Director of Innovation. The main responsibilities for this role include identifying new technologies applicable to the carbon sink sector and landing new developments that allow ReTree and its clients to evolve in the monitoring and restoration of nature. Together with the IT Team, the Scientist will create new services and improve existing ones.
We are looking for initiative-taking people with a strong sense of purpose and interest in sustainability and social impact.
A background in R&D and Management will be necessary although we will prioritize a positive attitude and excitement for discovering above all.
Your Challenge:
Forest & Nature applied Technologies: Under the guide and supervision of our Director of Innovation & CEO:
- Investigate new avenues for technological and biological improvement for the restoration of nature. These developments must be aligned with ReTree's values and mission: carbon offsetting, rural job creation, protection of biodiversity and stopping desertification.
- Find and validate new technologies applicable to the sector. Upgrading ReTree’s algorithm with the aim of verifying and certifying it internationally.
- Good understanding of mathematics, nature modelling, AI, Earth Observation Systems.
- Build carbon solutions proposals based on new ways to approach the problem.
- Understanding and introducing Treegital (our in-house platform) to clients, showing all the metrics related to their decarbonization plan.
- Explore new certifications and verify viability with ReTree projects.
- Create real prototypes to test our new solutions and analyses results.
- Occasionally, travel to visit real sites prototypes.
- Attend to events related to innovation, technology, sustainability monitorization, forest, carbon offsetting…in order to be always updated with the latest news in these sectors.
- Occasionally, give talks representing ReTree.
- Manage a group of researchers in the future.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Data Analytics, Big Data, Aerospace Engineering, Electronic Engineering or similar.
- 2-10 years of experience in R&D.
- Very strong sense of purpose and interest in nature.
- Outstanding organizational communication.
- Efficient.
- Autonomous to work, although the ability to work as a team is valued.
- Basic understanding of financial principles and budgeting.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ingenious and with a decisive attitude.
- Ability to propose improvements
Nice to have:
- Familiar with the use of machine learning and deep learning.
- QGIS, Google Earth Engine Code (or similar).
- Analysis and testing of spectral images.
- Blockchain development.
- Analysis and acoustic tests.
- Medium-low level computer programming.
- Bilingual or fluent in Spanish and English.
