The Swiss Ornithological Institute is a non-profit foundation dedicated to ornithology and the protection of birds. It monitors native birds, researches their way of life and advocates for threatened species. The Swiss Ornithological Institute has over 200 employees working across Switzerland. A core task is to promote bird conservation based on solid research evidence.
The bird migration unit studies and strives to protect migratory birds, which are under particular pressure. We do this by using frontline methods, for example tracking and radar, and engage in collaborations with partners along the flyways. Our focus is on small, songbird-sized migratory landbirds.

Research Associate in Bird Migration Biology (80-100%)
Your tasks
- Analyse and publish existing tracking data from previous research within the unit.
- After an initial focus on existing data, establish own field research, ideally in Switzerland.
- Conduct field studies on migratory birds, involving tracking methods.
- Lead the analyses and interpretation of own tracking data.
- Disseminate research findings through publications, presentations and outreach.
- Keep up to date on research topics, for example by visiting international conference.
- Contribute to knowledge transfer, planning and coherence of the unit.
- Support the unit and Swiss Ornithological Institute on other tasks as needed.
Your profile
- A PhD and research experience in ecology, animal behavior, evolutionary biology or a related field, including animal tracking.
- Experience with appropriate quantitative methods, including analysis of tracking data.
- A track record of publication on avian research and a solid background on migration.
- A team-oriented work style.willingness to initiate own research projects within the remits of the Institute.
