Departmental Overview
The Division of Ecosystem Sciences examines the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems including agricultural lands, forests, and rangelands, and their interactions with soil, air, water and organisms (microbes, plants, invertebrates, wildlife, livestock). We investigate the role of human activity in ecosystems and the problems humans create, including atmospheric changes and ecological diversity.
Position Summary
The Middleton and Brashares Labs at UC Berkeley seek a qualified field assistant to support research on gray wolves in the state of California. The gray wolf naturally recolonized California in 2014 after nearly 100 years’ absence, and there are now 7 confirmed packs in the state. Working in close coordination with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, UC Berkeley scientists will provide fundamental ecological and social science to support and enhance CDFW’s wolf conservation and management efforts.
The ecological science efforts will combine wildlife tracking, camera trapping, and field sampling of predation patterns to quantify wolf and native ungulate space use, habitat associations, and predation risk. The social science efforts will combine stakeholder interviews and/or surveys to help evaluate the Department’s pilot conflict reduction program and provide recommendations for future enhancements. UCB will also develop recommendations for longer-term research and management action. In the field, this effort will be prioritized to packs in North-Eastern California, though research attention may shift or expand to other locations as needed.
Generally, the field assistant will be involved in many aspects of the research, particularly camera trapping, diet, and predation studies, while also helping broadly with the logistics. The assistant will be expected to work closely within a team and also independently, and will at times stay at remote field locations.
Call for Wildlife Techs for UC Berkeley Wildlife Project
Under the supervision of UC Berkeley, this position supports the California Wolf Project (CAWP) by conducting essential fieldwork related to the project across Northern California. The Wildlife Technician will assist with data collection for the larger CAWP project, including camera trap maintenance, scat collection, field necroscopies, and cluster site investigations. This role requires rigorous physical activity, including navigation and hiking in remote mountainous terrain for extended periods and wilderness camping. This role also requires being comfortable collecting tissue and scat, including the ability to perform necropsies on native prey species.
The desired applicant will work independently or part of a small team; recognizing the minimal latitude based on the protocols established but is able to problem-solve while in the field. Shared housing is provided near Quincy, CA, though technicians are expected to camp in the field (with all essential equipment provided by CAWP). Technicians are expected to work a 40-hour work week, which can be broken up depending on needs in the field at the time. Recognizing the highly variable nature of fieldwork, this schedule is subject to change and a high degree of adaptability is essential.
