 About this exciting opportunity

As an Experimental Scientist you will be responsible for providing expert technical support in one or several areas of molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, genomics and field activities. The position will provide lab and field based experimental skills and act as a captain of data records and metadata curation. The experimental scientist will play a central role in the safe technical training and mentoring of staff, students and visitors, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Isolation and preservation of microorganisms for further analysis;
  • Performing routine phenotypic and genotypic identification and qPCR analysis of marine invertebrates, associated microorganisms and marine microbial communities, and;
  • Preparing DNA and RNA extractions from corals, marine microbial communities and complex environmental samples.

About you

Underpinning your suitability for this role will be your tertiary qualification in marine biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry along with your demonstrated experience with current and emerging molecular techniques used in marine molecular ecology and microbiology. Your demonstrated experience with Occupational Health and Safety matters and data analysis, including sequence and bioinformatics analysis will support you in this position. Experience with aquarium and laboratory-based experiments with different life stages of marine organisms would be highly desirable.
