 Job Opportunity: Marine and Turtle Program Manager at MRCI (Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute)

MRCI is seeking a passionate and experienced Marine and Turtle Program Manager to lead its Marine Conservation and Turtle Monitoring Programs on the beautiful island of Nosy Komba, Madagascar. This unique role offers the chance to manage hands-on projects focused on marine biodiversity, coral reef health, and sea turtle conservation.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Management

  • Coordinate marine conservation projects, including reef monitoring, artificial reef construction, fish and invertebrate surveys, and underwater clean-ups in collaboration with Ocean Conservancy and PADI AWARE.
  • Manage the turtle monitoring program, collecting regular data on nesting, behavior, and population health.
  • Design and implement new conservation initiatives in line with MRCI’s mission.

Volunteer Coordination and Training

  • Lead training sessions for volunteers on species identification and survey methods.
  • Supervise volunteer activities, ensuring they are well-versed in safety protocols, research techniques, and conservation ethics.

Field Research & Data Collection

  • Conduct regular coral reef health surveys, fish population density studies, and invertebrate biodiversity assessments.
  • Coordinate beach patrols, nesting data collection, and turtle tagging.
  • Analyze and report findings to contribute to ongoing conservation efforts and share with partners.

Community Engagement & Education

  • Foster sustainable fishing practices and environmental awareness within local communities.
  • Organize beach clean-ups and educational workshops with local leaders and schools.

Partnerships & Reporting

  • Collaborate with partners such as PADI AWARE, Ocean Conservancy, and other NGOs to strengthen MRCI’s impact.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports and support grant writing for new conservation projects.

Key Qualifications:

Education: Degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years in marine conservation or project management.
  • Strong knowledge of coral reef ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and turtle conservation.
  • Experience in volunteer management and community outreach.

Certifications:

  • PADI Divemaster or equivalent.
  • Experience leading dive trips and supervising underwater research.

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting capabilities.
  • Ability to adapt to remote and challenging environments.
