Lead Freshwater Scientist – Conservation Science Partners (CSP)

Conservation Science Partners (CSP) is looking for a Lead Freshwater Scientist to join their emerging Freshwater Solutions Lab. In this role, you will lead projects focused on conserving and managing freshwater habitats, including rivers, floodplains, and wetlands. CSP is a nonprofit that applies science and technology to preserve nature through collaborations with federal agencies, non-profits, and businesses. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in high-impact freshwater conservation work while supporting a diverse and innovative team.
Key Responsibilities:
Research and Conservation Projects:
- Lead and manage multiple research initiatives focused on freshwater ecosystems, utilizing computer modeling, field studies, and applied research techniques.
- Design and develop research projects related to freshwater systems, focusing on the impact of climate change, water management, and land cover changes on habitats.
Data Analysis and Geospatial Work:
- Analyze ecological datasets and perform spatial analysis related to freshwater ecosystems using GIS and other geospatial tools.
- Develop reproducible workflows for data processing and modeling in statistical programming languages like R or Python.
Project Management and Communication:
- Supervise and collaborate with staff scientists, postdocs, and contractors.
- Develop clear, effective science communication products, including reports, presentations, and data visualizations tailored to diverse stakeholders.
Client and Partner Engagement:
- Work with a wide range of clients and partners in both the public and private sectors, including federal agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions.
- Assist in developing funding partnerships and new revenue streams to support the team’s work.
Freshwater Conservation and Policy:
- Stay informed on policies, protection strategies, and restoration approaches for freshwater ecosystems, especially in the U.S. context.
- Collaborate with underrepresented communities to integrate diverse perspectives in conservation work.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Graduate-level experience in freshwater ecology, conservation, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of research or professional experience in the field.
- Expertise in freshwater conservation, modeling, and analysis of geospatial data.
- Experience with R or Python for data analysis and modeling.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects.
Desired:
- Knowledge of freshwater protection and restoration policies, including floodplains and wetlands.
- Familiarity with cloud-based computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Experience working with diverse, underrepresented communities in conservation.
