Doctoral student in Biology with a focus in ecological physiology
Location: Lund, Sweden
Organization: Lund University, Department of Biology
Contract Type: 4-year PhD position (doctoral studentship), full-time Possibility of extension to 5 years (including 20% departmental duties)
Project Description: This PhD project, part of the ERC-funded "HotLife – Pathways to survival in a hotter world" program, aims to investigate the evolvability of heat tolerance in endotherms. The research will focus on:
- Conducting state-of-art thermal physiology assays and studies of cellular metabolism using captive bird models
- Combining artificial selection and temperature manipulation experiments
- Analyzing physiological responses within and across generations
- Using respirometry and body temperature measurement techniques
- Opportunity to learn morphometric and ptilometric techniques, biophysical modelling, and gene expression analyses
Requirements: Essential:
- MSc degree in Biology with specialization in animal ecology, animal physiology, conservation physiology, ecological physiology or related field
- Valid driving license (minimum Swedish license category B)
- Excellent written and oral English skills
- Proficiency in statistics and experience with R programming
Desirable:
- Practical experience with thermo-physiological, bioenergetic, or cellular physiology methods
- Previous experience with bird handling and sampling techniques
- Strong collaborative skills and ability to work independently
