Salary: $4,583.33/month
Main Description: Research technician position to support research on intertidal ecology in Hawai'i and coral reef/coastal oceanography in Okinawa, Japan. The role involves:
- Supporting near-shore marine research in tropical intertidal and coral reef ecosystems
- Collecting organisms and seawater chemistry data
- SCUBA diving and snorkeling activities
- Working with oceanographic instruments
- Data entry and analysis using R and GitHub
- Equipment maintenance and permit management
- Mentoring students, volunteers, and interns
- International travel for extended periods
Requirements: Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Ecology, Marine Sciences, Oceanography, Environmental Science or related field
Experience:
- 2-4 years of experience in oceanography or marine ecology field research
- Experience with basic coding in R
- SCUBA certification (NAUI, PADI, etc.)
- Valid driver's license
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of marine systems biology/ecology
- Understanding of seawater carbonate chemistry
- Experience with coastal oceanography instrumentation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to carry more than 50 pounds
- Capable of SCUBA diving
- Able to work several continuous hours in field conditions
- Available for international travel for several months at a time
Desirable Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in oceanographic, biological, or ecological sciences
- Strong knowledge of intertidal and/or coral reef ecology
