Every year in February, the Arctic Fox Project begins searching for volunteers to assist with summer fieldwork on the Swedish tundra. The application period for 2025 is open until April 13.

Type of Position Volunteer fieldwork position (minimum 3-week commitment in July) Possible small compensation of approximately 100 SEK/day (requires Swedish identification/SINK number)
Project Description The Swedish Arctic Fox Project conducts essential field research across the Swedish mountain range and tundra, focusing on monitoring arctic fox populations and understanding the broader ecological conditions that support their survival. Our work encompasses:
- Arctic fox den monitoring and occupancy assessment
- Small rodent surveys using snap trapping
- Bird surveys via line transects
- Vegetation analysis
- Species observation documentation
- Arctic fox behavioral studies at inhabited dens
Key Requirements
- Minimum 3-week availability during July 2025
- Strong physical fitness for daily hiking (10-20 km off-trail with heavy packs)
- Ability to work in challenging mountain conditions
- Proficiency in map navigation
- Experience with outdoor living and camping
- Positive attitude and mental resilience
- Basic understanding of ecology and nature (biology degree not required)
- Own camping equipment (except tent, which is provided)
Working Conditions
- Work in pairs (assigned by project)
- Tent accommodation on the mountain tundra
- Challenging weather conditions (rain, sun, wind, summer snow)
- Presence of mosquitoes and gnats
- Carrying all personal food and equipment
- Extended periods in remote locations

Important Notes
- International volunteers must arrange their own transportation to/from Sweden
- Arctic fox sightings are not guaranteed and depend on lemming availability
- All personal field equipment and food must be provided by the volunteer
- This is considered one of the most demanding field experiences in ecological research
